Shhhhh
Went out to the Canopy on Wednesday for a great night of acoustic music. Jonathon Childers was entertaining as usual. He’s a talented songwriter and a name you should look out for in the near future. Carl Hauck was up on the stage next and gave a great performance. He has a great voice and is an incredibly talented guitarist. He is easily one of the most talented singer/songwriters in C-U. Tracey and Tricia followed up with their last show in the area for the past few months. I honestly didn’t hear too much of their set. However, their cover of Modest Mouse’s “Float On” sounded great.
Joe Pug took the stage next. He was the favorite of the night, playing tracks from his EP “Nation of Heat” as well as some new songs from his forthcoming debut full length. I’ve never heard the crowd in the void room applaud so loudly after Joe’s performance of “Hymn #101.” Joe has a special sort of talent that doesn’t come around too often. Make sure that you come check out his show the next time he comes to the area.
Stan McConnell finished off a great night of music with a great variety of Santa songs, cover songs, and some songs of his own. His solo performance of Santa’s “Holy Hum” was a personal favorite of mine. It was amazing night of music that I won’t soon forget.
Another Great Week Coming Up!
Hope you had a chance to get out to the Disco Biscuits show last night and were in the right frame of mind to enjoy it. I’ve heard some fun stories of lost items and big falls from the staff here, so hopefully none of you reading were involved.
We’ve got another great set of shows lined up for you this week, so part three of my tribute band roundup is going to have to wait until later this week. Wednesday night will be a great night of acoustic performances featuring Jonathon Childers, Tracey and Tricia, Carl Hauck, Stan McConnell, and Joe Pug. You can check out my opinions about Mr. Pug a few posts down. If you don’t plan on doing that, I’ll still just say that it’s sure to be a great show.
Thursday night will be another great lineup of local acts. Post-Historic will be headlining the show. Their EP “Memory Banks of Blue” was definitely one of my favorite local releases of last year. Joining them will be another favorite of mine, the Number One Sons, and Brian Esmao and Kilroy et al.
Saturday wraps up a great week of local artists with World’s First Flying Machine. They truly have one of the most unique sounds and live shows in the area, it’s something you certainly won’t want to miss. Butterfly Assassins, Sunset Stallion, and Yossarian will also be playing that evening.
That’s all I got for ya now, hope to see you out at the shows this week!
Covers, Covers, and More Covers
Good afternoon,
To keep with the tribute band theme I had with the last post, I wanted to update you on the slew of other tribute bands taking the Canopy Club stage this semester.
First up on the schedule is This Must Be the Band on February 7th. They are a Talking Heads tribute act that will be recreating the film “Stop Making Sense.” The show starts at 7pm and cover is $8 for the evening. You can check out their myspace here: http://www.myspace.com/thismustbetheband
Next up is Strange Design: a tribute to Phish on February 9th. Don’t wanna dish out the big bucks to see Phish on the reunion tour? This is certainly going to be the next best alternative. And you can’t beat the price: $5 cover. Show starts at 9pm. Here’s a clip from a show last year: Strange Design: Foam
That’s all for now, come back later this week as I’ll be writing Part 3 of this tribute band preview thing I’ve got goin here. Stay warm.
Kickin off the New Year right
Hope you’ve all had a chance to come out in the past couple of weeks for Piano Man, Pizza Pitcher and a Movie, or any of our great local live shows so far at the Canopy. Things will really be getting into the swing of things in the next couple of weeks. We’ve got local rockers The Third Flight coming this Saturday, our usual Monday and Tuesday night lineups of Zmick and the Piano Man, and a couple great tribute acts coming up. Us2 will be giving us an acoustic take on some of U2’s hits tonight, but what I’m really excited for is Who’s Bad? Tribute to Michael Jackson coming up next Thursday, January 22nd.
I unfortunately wasn’t able to make it to the club to see these guys when they came through in the fall, but every person I’ve talked to that was there said it was amazing. This act is spot-on when it comes to every era of Michael Jackson’s amazing career. The show starts at 9pm and tickets are $10 in advance. Make sure to check these guys out at the link below.
2009 Goings on
Hey all, just got back into Champaign yesterday after a little break. I forgot how nice and quiet campus is without us crazy kids around. I guess I can’t get used to it, though, give it another week before everything’s destroyed again.
I headed back into the office today to see a new batch of shows that will definitely be worth checking out. One in particular is a great night of acoustic music featuring local favorties Jonathon Childers, Carl Hauck, Tracey and Tricia, and Santa’s Stan McConnell. They will all be great, but what I’m really looking forward to is Joe Pug hitting the stage.
Joe Pug is an acoustic artist that calls on all the great things about amazing artists of the past to make some truly wonderful music. His song, “Hymn #101″ was easily one of the favorite songs I heard 2008. If you’re interested in checking him out before the show on January 28th, just head to his website www.nationofheat.com and he’ll give you his CD’s away for free. He believes, correctly, that just a listen will instantly make you a fan. Tickets are $7 at the door on January 28th, you won’t wanna miss it.
