Happy Holidays
Happy Holidays to you and yours. I’m back home up in the south suburbs, so you might not be hearing too much from me in the next couple of weeks. I will have a ton to talk about when I get back, though. There’s already a great lineup of acts announced for next year including Keller Williams, Disco Biscuits, Murder By Death, and many more. So stay warm and enjoy the holidays, I know I’ll be parked in front of the TV tomorrow watching A Christmas Story on repeat.
Wu in Review
Hi all, sorry I wasn’t able to catch you up on the last two nights of the Fall Semester Showdown, I was in bed with a fever and sore throat for the weekend. I was, however, able to muster up a little strength to get out to the Wu-Tang Clan show Saturday night.
I got into the club in time to see most of the Krukid set. He was great as usual. He brought a lot of energy to a crowd that seemed to have very little for most of his time on stage.
Ten o’clock finally came around, time for the main event, time for…ICE WATER? There was another opening act that has been touring with the Wu that performed a few songs that were very reminiscent of the west coast gangsta rap years. It certainly wasn’t bad, just completely unexpected.
There was another half hour wait before the Wu-Tang Clan finally hit the stage. It was a pretty entertaining show, I was just hoping for a little more energy. Most of the members, except for Raekwon, seemed pretty uninterested and really could care less about being there. This was pretty apparent when I saw Ghostface actually texting during one of the songs. This lack of energy came from the crowd as well, though. It seemed like there were a lot of people that were there just to say that they’ve seen Wu-Tang and weren’t really familiar with anything they’ve ever done. This unfortunately made the experience a poor one for true fans, who didn’t get to see this great act at their best. It was still a pretty entertaining show, though. It can never truly be a terrible concert experience with an ODB singalong.
The Showdown So Far
Wednesday night was definitely a fun one over at the Canopy. My night started when Sunset Stallion hit the stage. This relatively new act sounds great and I think they can really do some cool things in the area. The almost lounge-sounding version of “Seven Nation Army” was pretty sweet. Next up was Post Historic. These guys have just gotten better and better every time I’ve seen them. They have a ton of energy up there on stage and “Memory Banks of Blue” was the highlight of the entire night. World’s First Flying Machine wrapped up the night. I haven’t seen them since they were relatively new to the scene last year and they’ve come a long way. Their sound is definitely evolving into something very cool and different than anything you can see in the area.
Tonight is sure to be another great night. Elsinore, New Ruins, Santa, and Tall Tale will all be sharing the stage. Doors open at 8pm and it’s only $5 to get in. Make sure to get out there.
I’m gonna have to be killed before I lose, and I ain’t gonna die easy
I bet you if hip-hop was around during Ali’s prime, he could’ve put out a better album than “Illmatic.”
TONIGHT! TONIGHT! TONIGHT! We’re kicking off the *ding*ding*ding…FALL SEMESTER SHOWDOWN
It’s that time again, the end of the semester where some of C-U’s best local acts get together for 3 days to play some awesome shows. Tonight we have World’s First Flying Machine, Post Historic, Sunset Stallion, Hathaways, Jonathon Childers, and Brian Esmao (I learned it’s pronounce Brian Es-MAYO so don’t get it wrong like I did.) Tomorrow night is sure to be a great night with Zmick and Underpaid Packy. Elsinore will finish it up Friday with Santa, New Ruins, and Tall Tale taking the stage as well. It’s sure to be a fun few days, I expect to see each and every one of you out there.
Bring on da funny
Hope you’ve all enjoyed your weeks, I spent mine writing a couple papers and working on tons of final projects for class. It’s been an insane week for me, but I did fortunately get a chance to check out the Monday Night Miracle with Zmick Monday night. What a bunch of ridiculously talented guys, you gotta get out and check out the show if you haven’t before. You’ll definitely wanna sing along to a few of the covers as well.
Now that my hellish week is over, I’m planning on taking full advantage of the Canopy Club’s events Saturday night. Sketch comedy troupe Fishing with Dynamite will hit the stage early tomorrow night. Doors open at 6:30, make sure you get a few drinks in ya before the funny begins. After that, the Pink Floyd tribute band Eclipse will be playing at the club. I’ve honestly never heard music from them, but I’ve only been told good things about the live performance.
Cya out there.
Oh Hi There
Hey everyone, it’s been quite awhile actually. I apologize, I just woke up an hour ago after my extensive Thanksgiving feast. WAY too much turkey.
I figure I’ll catch you up to speed with what’s going on at the club this week. Wednesday we have a pretty packed night filled with some local artists. Lucky Mulholland and the Brother Whys will be playing an early show at 8pm, which is sure to be delightful. DJ Swiis and Liar’s Drive will also be performing, their show starts at 11pm. Friday is sure to be fun with Mae coming through as well. Local acts Jiggsaw and Snowsera will be opening up for the experimental rock act. If you’re looking for some laughs, the Canopy will be the place to be on Saturday night. Sketch comedy troupes Fishing With Dynamite and Debono will be gracing the stage once again to make you laugh uncontrollably. The doors open at 6:30pm and the show starts at 7. Make sure to get there early to get a few drinks in you.
That’s all for now, check back the rest of the week as I’ll go a little more in depth about these shows.
