Dropkick Murphys show…in review
The show Friday was just as crazy as I thought it would be. These guys never seem to lose a step, even after over ten years of just about non-stop touring. From the moment Al Barr ran on stage and looked like he was ready to punch someone in the face to the blazing finisher that was Citizen C.I.A., it was an intense show that everyone in the audience seemed to enjoy.
The day started for me at noon actually. I was the runner for the show, so I had to get all the stuff for the rider and drive the guys in the band around all day. It was fun and definitely paid off when I got to stroll right up to the front for the set. They played a great set featuring a good variety of songs throughout that spanned the band’s career. The crowd got a special treat as well. Liza Graves, the lead singer of Civet, got on stage to do the female vocals for “The Dirty Glass”, which also happens to be one of my favorite DKM songs. They played all the favorites and some lesser known ones that really rocked the whole crowd. It was definitely a great show and one of the best ones I’ve seen at the Canopy all year.
Wu-Tang Clan Ain’t Nuttin to Fuck Wit
One of the biggest shows of the year was just announced today. The greatest hip hop group out there, the Wu-Tang Clan will be hitting the Canopy Club stage on December 13th!!! Ghostface, RZA, JZA, Raekwon, and the whole crew (minus Method Man) will be hitting the stage together. Get these tickets as soon as you can, they’re sure to go fast. You can get em at jaytv.com, the Canopy Club, Family Pride, Bacca Cigars, and Exile on Main Street.
On an unrelated subject, I’d like to welcome the readers of Champaign Taste to the blog. Come check out a show and eat some empanadas from Manolo’s Pizza, I guarantee you’ll love them.
PPM
Hope you had a chance to make it out for Pizza, Pitcher, and a Movie last night for Christmas on Mars. After we watched the soundtrack for about 20 minutes without realizing that it wasn’t actually the movie, it finally began. It was what you could expect from such an interesting group as The Flaming Lips, it had quite a heavy message, but probably would have been a lot more deep and thought provoking if I had smoked pot beforehand, which is what the movie credits actually told everyone to do beforehand. I would personally take their advice if you decide to watch it, it’ll probably be more entertaining that way.
This week will see a ton of HUGE names hit the Canopy stage. Plain White T’s will be here Thursday night, Dropkick Murphys will be here Friday night, and Puddle of Mudd will wrap up a huge week on Saturday. Make sure to get your tickets before it’s too late.
If you need your dose of Canopy Club before Thursday, we always have our Monday Night Miracle with Zmick and the Piano Man and his $3 Long Islands on Tuesday. We’ll also be showing Animal House on the big screen Tuesday at 5:30, it’ll definitely be entertaining. Get out here for something this week, no excuses.
Fucking Insane Man!!!
That’s what everyone I asked said about the Umphrey’s McGee show when I asked them how it was afterwards. I was out in the Void Room selling merch for the band during the show so I couldn’t really give you an eye-witness acount, but I’ll take everyone’s word that was inside. Hopefully you were there to enjoy the great live show.
Tonight we have a great treat for you all as well. Come out to a very special Pizza, Pitcher, and a Movie tonight, as we’ll have two showings of the Flaming Lips’ new film “Christmas on Mars.” They’ll be showing it at 9:30pm and 11:30pm. Apocalypse Now will also be showing at 7:30pm. As always, it’s only gonna cost you $10 for a large pizza and a pitcher of ice cold beer, with $5 pitcher refills. Come check it out, it should be a swell time.
We Jammin
Get ready for tomorrow night, as everyone’s favorite jam band and Canopy Club favorites Umphrey’s McGee will be hitting the stage. It’s sure to be a fun night and these guys are sure to wear you out with their intense live show. I don’t know if I’ll personally be able to outlast these guys on stage. They just seem to never get tired of rockin. If you don’t believe me, check out this performance of the song “Triple Wide.” There will be plenty more where this came from.
If you can’t wait until tomorrow to get to the Canopy, we have a great show lined up tonight as well. Sunset Stallion will be headlining a show that includes Post Historic, Jared Bartman, and Yossarian. Cover is $7 at the door, but if you find a member of one of the bands, tickets are only $5. Go find em.
The most anticipated show of the year finally happened last Wednesday night. Girl Talk hit the stage alongside CX KiDTRONiK and The Death Set. The Death Set was a nice energetic way to get ready for the insanity that was going to begin after their set. It was like a punk rock dance party, they would play some loud, fast song and play Thriller in between songs. There was never a dull moment, despite their problems with the mic stands.
Gregg Gillis hit the stage around 11:30, arriving to an uproar from the fans. After about 5 minutes, the stage was filled with fans surrounded the DJ for the remainder of the set. It was a great time, I’ve never seen so many people dancing and having as much fun at the Canopy than last Wednesday night. The Girl Talk stage show is like nothing out there. With the sheer amount of samples he uses, there is something that anyone can enjoy with the show.
The show was everything a fan could have hoped for (except for the table breaking for about twenty minutes). Everyone really seemed to enjoy the show and the performers seemed to really enjoy themselves as well. Overall, it was just a great night.
Hooray!!!
Sarah Palin’s back in Alaska never to be heard from again!!!!
Why not celebrate by coming out tonight and dancing like a complete idiot? If you’re lucky enough to have a ticket, Girl Talk will finally be taking the stage TONIGHT. The doors open at 8pm and the show starts at 9pm with The Death Set and CX KiDTRONiK opening. Make sure to get out here early to reserve your spot on the dance floor. It’s sure to be a great time.
Vote or Die!!!
I miss P Diddy.
Hope everyone had a fun weekend, hopefully you made your way out to one of the great shows or movies the past few days. I personally went and checked out the Santa show Saturday night. I was really impressed with everyone I saw on the bill. Pomegranates, a group out of Cincinnati, was very entertaining. They had a great sound that you can’t really pigeonhole into one genre. Their use of a variety of instruments and styles was something that I really think can catch on. Butterfly Assassins was also enjoyable. They write some great songs, but their theatrics on stage seemed a bit forced to me. Overall, they sounded good, though. Santa finished a great night of music out with a really solid set as usual. They are really changing their sound and I like the direction they are taking.
Get out to Zmick tonight for the Monday Night Miracle. Have a good pre-election Monday.
Ho ho ho
Hope you all enjoyed your Halloween. I know I enjoyed beating the shit out of people as Steven Seagal. I had some crazy moves with my bamboo stick.
Now that Halloween is behind us, we have Santa to look forward to tonight. They’ll be playing their great blend of rock and indie pop at the Canopy stage tonight. Check them out with the Butterfly Assassins, Pomegranates, John Hardy & The Public and The Names That Spell. Show starts at 9pm and it’s $7 to get in. See ya out there.
