Last night was great as expected. The show started out with Abstract Rude. His delivery was great, as you would expect with anyone on Rhymesayers, but his stage presence was a little lacking.
I’m sure it’s difficult to get a crowd going at a hip hop show when you’re opening, so you can’t fault him too much. I’d definitely recommend checking out his recorded material, I know I’m going to.
Next up on the stage was Blueprint. He was a step up both in flow and stage presence. He had a confident swagger that most MCs attempt but can never quite pull off. Blueprint had the content and the style that very few artists out there have. He definitely made a fan out of me with that set.
Slug, Ant, and company hit the stage shortly after Blueprint to a suddenly awakened crowd. They played an amazing set, one that was made even better with some backing instruments. Many of the songs came alive with the use of guitar and keys. The guitar added to “Puppets” brought the song to another level. Slug knows how to command a crowd, which was made obvious by the crowd participation throughout the set. Atmosphere’s set was made even better by the freestyle with Abstract Rude and Blueprint at the end of the night. It was a great hip hop show, the Rhymesayers crew once again didn’t disappoint.
Just a few hours away
As I’m writing this, Atmosphere’s bus is parking outside of the club. I don’t know how many times I can say this, but it’s going to be an amazing concert. Rhymesayers is top to bottom one of the best labels in independent hip hop, so having 3 acts coming through the Canopy is definitely something to look forward to. Doors open at 8pm and there are plenty of tickets still available, so make sure to make your way out here for what is sure to be a great time.
As for some newly announced shows, we’ve recently confirmed a show with Funky Monks: A Tribute to the Red Hot Chili Peppers. They’re definitely the best RHCP tribute band you’ll see in the midwest, they have the look and sound down pat. They have a whole section of their website with some videos of past performances if you’d like to check it out yourself at funkymonksmusic.com. I personally like this video from their show in Carbondale last April. Check it out.
Atmosphere
I hope you all enjoyed your scary movies Sunday night, I didn’t have the guts to do it. I certainly will be there tomorrow night, however, for what it sure to be one of the best shows at the Canopy this semester. Slug and Ant are sure to put on a great show with a full band backing them. You can also hear an interview with Slug on WPGU at 4:15 tomorrow to get you excited for the concert.
Tickets are $18 in advance and the show starts at 9pm. I’ve also been told that Abstract Rude and Blueprint will certainly play great sets as well, so make sure to get there early. I’ll see you there.
Spooooooky
Tonight’s special Halloween edition of Pizza, Pitcher, and a Movie features three movies that were sure to have been the source of a nightmare you had at some point in your pre-teen years; or in my case, some point in the last two weeks. Check out:
Psycho: 7pm
The Shining: 9:30pm
Halloween: 12am
You may or may not see me there, I don’t know if I’m comfortable enough to scream like a little girl in front of my bosses. You all should definitely go and enjoy the large pizza and pitcher of beer for $10, though. I’ll consider whether or not I can muster up the courage to see you there.
So much blood!!
Now that I’ve had a couple of days to recover from that Gwar show I can finally bring myself to post again. It was quite the concert, definitely like nothing I’ve ever seen before. There was blood coming from so many different fake body parts. I definitely recommend you go out and see them the next time they come through the area.
Hopefully nobody’s reading this tonight because you’re all out at the Railroad Earth concert. Make sure to check out Paul and Storm tomorrow night, I’ve never listened in to the show but my roommate says they’re hilarious. If you go and don’t enjoy yourself, you can completely blame him. Fishing With Dynamite will be opening for the show as well. They were great when they headlined their own show, so I’m sure tomorrow night will be no different. That’s all for now, check back in tomorrow to see the lineup for Pizza, Pitcher, and a Movie this Sunday.
GWAAAARRRRRR!!!!!!1!!1!!!1!1!!!!
Hope you guys enjoyed the Piano Man last night. I was busy nursing my injuries (both mentally and physically) after an intense intramural flag football loss last night. I think I’ll get over it.
All will certainly be forgotten after Gwar hits the stage tonight. I won’t even pretend to be excited for the music, although I did see this pretty cool video they did for their cover of “School’s Out.” I just want to see some blood and chopped off heads.
Gwar\’s \”School\’s Out\” Video
I’ve only heard great things about the Gwar live show, so make sure to get out to the Canopy Club tonight. Tickets are $18 in advance, and it’s going to be more than worth the price of admission. The show starts at 8 with Kingdom of Sorrow and Toxic Holocaust hitting the stage before Gwar begins.
Pizza, Pitcher, and a Movie version 10.19
Hello all. Hope you enjoyed the week and had a chance to head out to a few shows at the Canopy. If you didn’t get a chance to head over our way, tonight is a great night to do so. Enjoy our large pizza and pitcher deal for $10 and see some classic flicks. Tonight’s lineup is great as always and includes:
No Country for Old Men- 7pm
Evil Dead- 9:30pm
Donnie Darko- 12am
See ya out there.
I wish I could find my camera cord…
so I can post the pictures from a great Missy Higgins show. The sound with her backing band was great, but Missy was her best when she was up by herself with her guitar. She’s a very talented songwriter and had a great on-stage presence as well. It was a great show and I’d love to see her become more popular here in the states. Make sure to pick up her latest album, “On a Clear Night.” I still haven’t had a chance to give it a listen, but if it’s half as good as her live show, you won’t regret it.
Make sure to come out tonight for what’s sure to be another great show with Mason Jennings. Tickets are $15 in advance and the doors open at 8pm.
Missy Higgins
I just got back from watching Missy Higgins do an in-studio performance at WPGU, and I’ll tell you right now that she just made me a fan instantly. She has a wonderful voice and the songs she played sounded great. Make sure to get out here at 7pm tonight to see her perform live at the Canopy Club. It will be a great show no doubt. And as always make sure to stay late for the Monday Night Miracle with Zmick. It’s sure to be a fun night at the Canopy.
It’s gonna be a good week
Hopefully you won’t be reading this until tomorrow morning because you were at Pizza, Pitcher, and a Movie night at the Canopy, but I just wanted to keep everyone updated on the goings on at the club this week. This week is packed with great shows, so make sure to get out to a few. Missy Higgins will be hitting the stage tomorrow night at 7pm, followed by the Monday Night Miracle with Zmick. Cross Canadian Ragweed will be in Urbana on Tuesday night. You can also check out Mason Jennings Wednesday and Man Man on Thursday. Keep checking back all week as I go more in depth with each act.
